Hij was naast componist en muziektheoreticus ook schrijver, beeldend kunstenaar en filosoof. Voordat Cage als kind in contact kwam met muziek had hij de wens om schrijver te worden en hij overtuigde zijn ouders dat een rondreis door Europa uiterst belangrijk zou zijn voor zijn academische studies. Zijnde een student van grote namen als Arnold Schönberg en Henry Cowel, is Cage meerdere malen ‘meester van hedendaagse kunst’ en katalysator van muzikale ‘avant garde’ genoemd. Zijn meest vermaarde werken zijn ‘3’44’ en natuurlijk zijn composities geschreven voor de geprepareerde piano. De eerste keer dat Cage de aandacht trok van Zeeuwse kranten was in het jaar 1958: De Provinciaalse Zeeuwse Courant schreef toen over de wereld première van de compositie Music Walk in Düsseldorf, Duitsland.
