Maar hij loofde God met zijn geest onder grote volharding des geloofs en offerde aldus, als een getrouw navolger van Christus, Gode zijn Schepper met vreugde zijn ziel op, aldus lezen we in de historie der martelaren van Adriaan van Haemstede. We zouden van Jan de Buck misschien niet veel weten, wanneer hij niet kans had gezien in de gevangenis een brief te schrijven aan zijn vrouw, kinderen, vader en alle christenen. Van kolen en speeksel heeft hij een soort inkt moeten maken. Het kenmerk van de calvinistische martelaren is geweest het getuigenis dat zij bij hun terechtstelling gaven door hetgeen zij nog konden zeggen of door het zingen van een psalm. Dit heeft men bij Jan de Buck (en anderen) onmogelijk gemaakt en zo blijft er van hem niets anders over dan het getuigenis die in zijn brief is vervat. Hij vertelt daarin hoe hij op de dinsdag na Pasen door twee pastoors, van Axel en van Boostenblijde werd verhoord over de voornaamste artikelen van het christelijk geloof. Hij getuigt dat hij van niemand kwijtschelding en vergeving der zonden wenst dan van Hem, die het Lam Gods is. En zo gaan de pastoors met hem langs de artikelen van de apostolische geloofsbelijdenis, waarbij de verschillen in visie duidelijk voor de dag komen en waaruit blijkt dat Jan de Buck niet alleen een grondige bijbelkennis had, maar ook wist wat er in de Nederlandse geloofsbelijdenis en de Heidelbergse catechismus stond.
