Volgens Smallegange waren de Baansten verwant aan de Van Borsselens. Een zekere Ritzard van Baanst, geboren in Oost-Souburg, geldt als hoofd van het geslacht. Van diens zoon Jan is het merkwaardige verhaal bekend dat hij op gevorderde leeftijd zijn enige dochter uithuwelijkte aan Guy van Beveren, waarbij Guy hem onder ede liet verklaren niet te zullen hertrouwen. Anders zou immers de erfenis de mist in kunnen gaan. Nauwelijks had Jan dit gezworen of hij kwam in Brugge de schone, 20-jarige Elisabeth van Bannighem tegen. De 70-jarige Jan had onmiddellijk spijt van zijn eed, kocht zijn dochter terug en &#039;teelde`, zoals de kronieken melden, bij Elisabeth nog tien kinderen. Van deze tien stammen de overige van Baansten af. Onder hen Guy van Baanst, die in 1448 onder Groede de [[Baanstpolder]] bedijkte en in 1449 de oostelijker gelegen Versantpolder, die allang weer in zee verdwenen is.
